Her magnum opus, Landscape Design: A Cultural and Architectural History Abrams, , was a singular gift to the field of landscape studies—and to intellectual and cultural history generally. The following year Rogers and other concerned New Yorkers founded the Central Park Conservancy to address the rampant vandalism and neglect that had produced this blighted landscape. It was the first private-public conservation partnership of its kind in the world. She reasoned that the effort to rebuild Central Park would succeed only if it were grounded in the comprehensive vision and transcendental ethos that had guided the Greensward Plan. Guided by the Olmsted and Vaux plan, Rogers and her Conservancy network made rebuilding the park an imperative for New Yorkers who valued democracy and access to nature. In her research and writing, Rogers has continued to investigate the Romantic influences that propelled Olmsted and Vaux in their park making.

A history of landscape design ranges from antiquity to the present day, exploring the diverse ways in which humankind has shaped the landscape around them, from ancient Egyptian royal cemeteries to magnificent Renaissance gardens to modern-day earthworks, reflecting on how the landscape reflects social development and cultural values.

Elizabeth Barlow Rogers, trained in art history and city planning, is internationally recognized for her leadership in revitalizing public parks and gardens. She was the founding president of the Central Park Conservancy.

Perhaps best known as the founding director of New York's Central Park Conservancy, which oversaw and funded the park's revitalization, Rogers The Forests and Wetlands of New York City here presents a comprehensive survey of landscape design. Viewing her subject as the art that modifies and shapes nature, she explores the cultural values that shape, or are embodied in, cities, parks, and gardens. Embracing all cultures and ranging from prehistoric times to the present, this book covers the broadest range of subjects implied by the title, including city planning, landscape architecture, conservation, earthworks, and other uses of land in contemporary art.

While this history is international in scope, it does narrow its primary focus to the United States when it reaches the late 20th century. The photographs and especially the plans are excellent and numerous.

Single pages or double-page spreads devoted to specific topics add an encyclopedic element while allowing Rogers to provide even more information, illustrations, and plans without interrupting the flow of her very readable text. Accessible to lay readers but of interest to scholars, this book could serve as the text for a comprehensive course on the history of landscape design.

A CONVERSATION WITH ELIZABETH BARLOW ROGERS

I purchased the book for a class I was taking entitled Landscape Traditions. Rogers' use of images and plans to explain the concepts of various landscapes and gardens, is very strategic and well laid out. The book provides an intro description of the background of each and every design and then brings your right into the landscape itself. Beautiful images, very well written and descriptive, overall great book! A major work every library should have.

Godine Publishers,This publication accompanies an exhibition on the influences of the Romantic movement on styles of landscape design in England, France, Germany, and the United States. Beginning with the reaction to the geometrically designed gardens of the seventeenth century, it traces developments in theory and practice as well as the increasing prestige of the landscape design profession, along with poetry and painting. More than simply a catalogue, the proposed publication recounts the publishing history of landscape albums, some of them frequently cited by scholars working in this field, and their role in the transmission of stylistic ideas. If someone asked you what you do for a living, would you describe yourself as an artist? While they might not lump themselves in with Picasso or Monet, landscape designers should be thought of as artists. In the introduction of her book, Rogers writes that landscape design is "an art that modifies and shapes nature. When you compare Central Park to a design like Versailles, a historic garden near Paris, France, you can see how these areas are representing what their respective countries were experiencing at the time. Since Versailles was built when the country was under authoritarian rule, Rogers relates that when you look at the garden, this is expressed through its strict lines and axes that extend far into the distance. On the other hand, she explained that Central Park is an expression of American Democracy.

Abrams,These two books are very different in format, weight and price but both are decidedly ambitious and try to look at landscape in the widest sense. Elizabeth Barlow Rogers' Landscape Design is the more orthodox. As its subtitle suggests, it seeks to provide an historical overview of landscape design from all times and cultures. The approach is essentially chronological, apart from a somewhat abrupt detour halfway through to the gardens of China and Japan, facilitated by a rather frail link - the Western taste for chinoiserie in the18th century. Only 30 pages are then devoted to the East, so the section seems little more than a parenthesis in a dominantly Western account. But Rogers recognises 'the rich psychological and mythopoeic relationship of human beings to landscape throughout history', and - from the menhirs at Carnac to the Modernism of Dan Kiley, via Renaissance Italy, Cartesian France and the England of 'Capability' Brown - she seeks to unravel the meanings that landscapes embody.
