At kola nuts exciting and stimulating properties of the central nervous system are attributed. This is because they contain alkaloids, such as caffeine, in a higher percentage than coffee. Indigenous peoples chew fresh leaves to get an exciting effect, while sportspeople consume kola nut-based supplements to recharge and feel energetic. The effects of kola nuts are also those of eliminating the sense of fatigue and tiredness, restoring strength and energy. In the latter case, however, and in the presence of serious mental disorders, it is advisable to contact a specialist and be prescribed the most suitable remedy. Among the substances that give kola nuts medicinal properties, in addition to caffeine, we find sugars, tannins, polyphenols, colatin, potassium, magnesium and phosphorus. Kola nuts are also credited with aphrodisiac properties. Indigenous peoples, in fact, also use these fruits as a sexual invigorator. Herbal remedies based on kola nuts are also recommended to treat impotence, but there is no definite confirmation on the subject, apart from the proven exciting power of these fruits, which can also be obtained by drinking several cups of coffee. Kola nuts also seem useful for appeasing nervous hunger and reducing excess weight. The intake of extracts of kola nut It is not recommended before going to sleep, due to the caffeine that stimulates the central nervous system can cause insomnia, to pregnant and lactating women, to children under 14 years and to those suffering from blood pressure and heart problems.
Dried kola nuts are used only by oral administration. No applications for external use are known until now. All this applies to both mental and physical fatigue problems, but also to beauty treatments aimed at reducing weight and treating cellulite. Other uses are in the food industry to flavor ice cream and drinks. As for the herbal form, kola nut extracts are sold in capsule form. The recommended dose is one tablet three times a day. In the capsules these extracts are mixed with other plants to obtain slimming and body weight control effects. Another "pharmaceutical" form is cola tincture, used mainly in homeopathy. The tincture of kola nuts is obtained by diluting the active ingredients in alcohol and water, that is, with different alcoholic strengths. Kola nuts can also be found in powder form for use in making liqueurs, in this case called elixirs. To prepare a cola nut elixir you need about 150 grams of roasted and pulverized cola nuts, 20 g of vanilla tincture, 60 g of glycerin, 500 g of Madeira wine, 260 g of water, 60 g of alcohol at 90 ° and 200 g of sugar. The crushed cola nuts are left to macerate in an airtight jar with alcohol and glycerin for 48 hours. The vase needs to be shaken from time to time. After two days, the other ingredients must be added. The mixture, mixed with a whisk, should be left to rest for eight days. At the end, it is filtered and left to age for 15 days.
