New life of an old door: DIY restoration

Doors experience heavy loads throughout their service life. It is not surprising that sooner or later they lose their original appearance: scratches, abrasions appear, the paint layer peels off. Wooden ones that react to changes in temperature and humidity are especially affected. Of course, it is easier to replace them, but this is not a cheap pleasure. Yes, and it is a pity to throw away an old door with history and unique design. The way out will be restoration.

Preparing for recovery

First, assess the scale of the work ahead. Small scratches and abrasions can be easily removed without removing the canvas. If the damage is significant, you should start with dismantling.

Remove the canvas from the hinges

First you need to remove the door and take it out of the opening. The order of work is determined by the design of the hinges. By the type of installation, hinges are:

  • mortise;
  • waybills;
  • screw-in.

It is more important to know the type of mechanism for dismantling, there are only two of them:

  • sectional;
  • one-piece.

The split mechanism simplifies the task. To remove the door from the hinges, you only need a lever, which can be used with a crowbar, a nail clipper or a regular board.

  1. Open the door so that the canvas is completely out of the box.
  2. Bring a crowbar or nailer under the bottom edge.

    Move the lever under the canvas

  3. Using an improvised lever, lift the canvas, the halves of the hinges should separate.

    Raise the door to release the hinges

  4. Pick up the door and set it aside.

If the hinges are connected by a single pin, it is even easier to disassemble them. You don't even need a lever for this.

Remove the cap and take out the pin

Remove the decorative caps and take out the axle element. This is done with a hammer, since the pin in the loop sits tightly. Be careful not to damage the door.

Pick up the door and set it aside

If the rod is stuck due to corrosion, treat the hinges with a rust remover, WD-40 will do, and try again. After removing the pin, the door will easily detach.

Treat rod with rust remover and try again

They act differently with one-piece loops. For work, you need a screwdriver or screwdriver.

  1. Open the door slightly and place bars under it to create support and prevent the blade from skewing during operation.
  2. Remove the screws from one card. They should be symmetrical on the top and bottom hinge.

    Remove screws from one card

  3. Detach the door and set it aside.

If only the canvas will be repaired without replacing the hinges, twist the card from it.

Removing the plastic door is also not difficult. The design of its hinges is detachable, with one pin, or an axial element.

  1. Dismantle with the door closed, but do not click the lock.
  2. Remove the pads that cover the hinge mechanism.
  3. Use a hammer to carefully knock out the axle mount.
  4. Grip the end of the pin that appears from below with pliers and remove it from the loop.

    Pull the axle out with pliers

  5. Tilt the door slightly towards you and lift to free it from the lower, loose hinge.

The canvas is removed, you can proceed to the next stage.

Freeing the door from the handle

For a high-quality restoration, the canvas must be freed from all decorative and functional elements, and first of all from the handle.

Remove handles and other decorative items from doors

Interior door handles are classified into three types:

  • stationary;
  • push;
  • knob.

Stationary ones are the simplest and most reliable. There are no built-in locks, only a latch or pinch rollers. This makes them easy to dismantle.

Models with visible screws are disassembled using a screwdriver or screwdriver. If no fasteners are found, it is possible that the structure has a common threaded rod. It can be removed by fixing the handle on one side of the door and unscrewing it counterclockwise on the other.

For a handle with a mechanical latch, the screws are first twisted and the decorative overlays around the handle are removed. A latch-tongue and a quadrangular rod will be found. They should be removed, after which the handles can be easily removed.

The design of the lever handle is simple and reliable, which makes it popular for interior doors. Two L-shaped brackets are connected with a rod. When you press one of them, the latch is hidden and the door can be opened.

L-shaped brackets of the lever handle are connected by a rod

Dismantling such a handle will take a little longer than a stationary one.

  1. First unscrew all the screws holding the trim and remove it.
  2. Take out one handle, the second is taken out together with the rod.
  3. Unscrew the screws holding the latch at the end of the door, remove the mechanism.

Knob is a round handle with a built-in lock. Opening takes place by turning around an axis. The knob allows you to close the door with a key from the inside. As a rule, they are equipped with a locking pin with a small spring.

  1. To disassemble such a handle, first unscrew and remove all decorative elements. Some models are not secured with screws; they can be removed by prying them off with a screwdriver.

    Knob allows you to close the door with a key from the inside

  2. Find the pin and push it down with a thin screwdriver. Detach the handles.

    Detach the handle

  3. At the end of the door, unscrew the screws on the latch strip and remove the mechanism.

Now the canvas is freed from accessories and nothing prevents you from going to the next stage. For paneled lacquered and painted doors, you will need to completely disassemble the canvas. This will help to better process embossed surfaces.

A paneled door is a frame made of wooden bars with inserts of thinner planks, plywood or hardboard.

Dismantling the panel door leaf

  1. We examine the canvas and find wooden dowels that hold the joints together. They are located in the corners opposite the lintels, but in some designs they may not be present.
  2. The found dowels are drilled with a drill with a drill of a suitable diameter.
  3. We arm ourselves with a rubber mallet and blows on the protruding parts from the center to the edges, we disconnect the structure. We proceed carefully so as not to damage the wood.
  4. As a result, we get separate details, which we will deal with in the future.

You can do without disassembly, but then the work will require more effort and pedantry.

Restoration of the canvas geometry

The tree reacts to temperature fluctuations and changes in humidity, so the door during operation can swell from moisture or dry out from lack of it. This leads to a violation of the geometry of the canvas.

If the fit of the leaf to the box is too tight, the door does not close well, sew the strapping, setting the required gap.

Slick end surfaces

Too large gaps between the door and the frame require a more thorough approach.

  1. Rearrange the hinges so that the blade lifts up. This will close the gap at the top.
  2. Screw the strap to the bottom edge to fit.

    Attach the bar to the bottom end

  3. Do the same with the side gap, attaching the bar to the end from the hinge side.
  4. Putty and clean the joints. After painting, they will become invisible.

Before starting the next stage, cover the furniture with foil, the work will be dusty. Better to do it in a workshop or garage.

Removing the paint layer

Place the canvas on a horizontal surface. It is better if it is a large table, but stools, trestles or bars will do. The main thing is that the structure is stable.

There are several ways to remove old paintwork:

  • mechanical;
  • thermal;
  • chemical.

Mechanical involves the use of a grinder, grinder or drill with a grinding attachment. If no power tools are available, handle by hand.

Remove old paint from doors

First, coarse-grained sandpaper is used, with which the entire canvas is roughly sanded. Panels, glazing beads and patterns are processed by hand.

The paint is removed with a coarse sandpaper

After that, the surface is sanded again, but this time with a medium grit sandpaper. It will smooth out roughness and remove raised fibers.

As a general rule of thumb for abrasive woodwork, the grain size of the skin decreases with each pass.

With the thermal method, a building hair dryer is used. The paint coating softens under the influence of high temperature and is easily removed with a spatula. After such treatment, the remaining paint is removed with an abrasive cloth and the surface is polished.

Old paint is warmed up with a hairdryer and removed with a spatula

The problem is that along with the paint, the wood on which it is applied also heats up and softens. Having experience in such processing of a wooden door, I can say that careless work with heated wood leads to its delamination and scuffing with a spatula. Such defects will then have to be additionally putty.

To avoid problems, do not overheat the surface, hold the spatula as close as possible to it, do not try to remove all layers of paint the first time, if there are several of them. It is better to walk in one place two or three times than to ruin the canvas.

Do not use this method for doors faced with fiberboard. Together with the paint, the top layer of the board also peels off.

The chemical method is the most gentle. Apply paint stripper to the surface with a brush. Wait for the time indicated in the annotation for the reaction between the liquid and the paint to occur.

After the paint is blotted out, it is removed with a spatula.

Carefully remove the swollen layer with a spatula, rinse the canvas. It is permissible to treat the remaining stains with a construction hairdryer, blowtorch or iron. Wrap the iron in a thick cloth. Adjust the temperature to avoid damaging the belt.

Remove paint completely, down to wood. The previously primed places also need to be cleaned.

When all the paint has been removed, go for a fine-grained sandpaper. This will remove the residue and sand the blade. Sanding along the wood fibers, otherwise there will be traces that will not be masked by the new coating.

Glass replacement

Doors with decorative inserts are beautiful, let in light and are often installed in interior openings. But they have one drawback - glass tends to break. In this case, it becomes necessary to replace it. It is not difficult to do this, but as in any business, the process has its own nuances.

First of all, the glass itself. It will have to be ordered from a glass workshop, since there is hardly a finished product of a suitable size and pattern on sale. In addition, glass must be of increased strength, ordinary glass will not work. The best choice is triplex, toughened impact-resistant glass.

But first you need to remove the fragments and measure. How to do this depends on the design of the door. The most common option for attaching the insert is using quarters, sometimes called glazing beads. Whatever you call it, the essence does not change: these are curly slats that hold the element in the canvas.

The procedure in this case is as follows:

  1. Use a screwdriver, chisel, or similar tool to lightly squeeze the quarters out to reveal the heads of the studs holding them.
  2. We clamp the caps with pliers and pull them out, after which the glazing beads are easily removed.
  3. First we take out the side quarters, then the lower, last of all the upper. This will help prevent broken glass from falling out.
  4. Free the opening from debris, clean it and take measurements.

    Take measurements to order glass

  5. When ordering glass, remember that its dimensions should be 2-3 mm less than the opening on each side.
  6. Apply colorless silicone sealant around the entire perimeter of the opening.
  7. Insert glass, press down with glazing beads and secure with nails.

It's a little more complicated if the insert is inside the canvas. But this is not an insoluble task either.

  1. Examine the ends of the door to find plugs hiding fasteners. These can be self-tapping screws or furniture confirms.
  2. Unscrew the screws, remove the long sidewall.
  3. Now he takes out the glass, release it from the seal.
  4. We move the seal to a new one.
  5. We install the glass and assemble the canvas in the reverse order.

When disassembling the quarters, try not to damage them and the canvas. Found chips, dents and other defects are removed with putty.

Door putty

Before repairing damage, wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove any residual sanding dust. If the surface has not been primed, it is primed and dried twice.

The choice of the composition depends on the size of the defect. For small scratches and dents, use an acrylic putty for wood, it is recommended to cover more serious damage with a cover made of the same type of wood, sticking it on the damaged area.

After drying, acrylic putty becomes colorless, which is important if the coating does not hide the structure of the wood.

Masters advise using a mixture of small sawdust with PVA wood glue as a restoration composition. The ingredients are mixed until a thick paste is obtained, which is used to seal the damage. After drying and sanding, the repair site is almost invisible.

Remove dust after sanding the surface

Putty is carried out in two stages: the first layer is applied, dried, sanded. Then the process is repeated. Do not forget to wipe the canvas with a napkin after each step to remove dust. This algorithm allows you to make the surface perfectly flat.

Painting a wooden door

After preparing the canvas, you can start painting it. It is carried out in two stages: the first layer is applied with white matte enamel, with the second layer the coating is tinted, it is given the required shade.

When choosing a paint, pay attention to hiding power. How well it hides surface defects depends on this characteristic.

To work you will need:

  • set of rollers;
  • cuvette;
  • end brush;
  • narrow brush;
  • primer paint;
  • finishing enamel.
  1. Use a narrow brush to paint over the profiled edges of the panels.

    Brush on the profiled edges

  2. Use a roller to apply paint to the panels.

    Apply paint on the panel with a roller

  3. Using an end brush, smooth the applied layer along the wood grain.
  4. Use a narrow brush to brush over the profiled edges.
  5. Wipe the lintels outside the panels with a rag so that the smudges do not create unevenness after drying.
  6. Paint the ends and frame with a roller.
  7. Smooth paint with an end brush along the grain.

    After applying paint with a roller, smooth it with a brush

  8. Let the coating dry.
  9. If necessary, apply another coat of primer in the same order.
  10. After the primer has dried, apply the topcoat using the same procedure.
  11. When tinting the canvas, apply several coats to obtain the desired color saturation.

Video instructions for painting the door

For lovers of natural wood, another method is suitable - opening with varnish. It does not hide the structure of the tree, but emphasizes it. The method can only be used on canvases without significant defects, otherwise the putty areas will shine through the varnish.

  1. Choose a varnish. It can be transparent or tinted.
  2. Stir it right in the jar until smooth. Proceed slowly so that no bubbles form.
  3. Dilute some of the varnish with water or thinner, depending on the type of base.
  4. Apply a primer coat to the prepared surface with diluted varnish. Work with a brush, applying the composition along the grain.Do not interrupt the strokes, otherwise stains will remain.
  5. After the primer has dried, sand the surface with a fine-grained sandpaper.
  6. Apply the second coat with undiluted varnish across the fibers.
  7. Repeat layers until you achieve a perfectly flat surface.

After each coat of paint has dried, use a fine-grained sandpaper over the canvas.

It happens that the restoration requires a laminated door. There are some peculiarities here.

Restoration of a laminated door

Despite the strength and durability of the laminate flooring, it does not last forever. The resulting scratches and abrasions spoil the surface and make it look untidy. The way out will be the restoration of the canvas, which is carried out in several ways.

Wax, paste, a marker for the restoration of the laminate will help get rid of minor defects. To use them, you don't even need to remove the door from the hinges.

Match the marker to the color of the coating and carefully paint over the defect. Apply a mild wax on top. After hardening, polish with a felt cloth.

Fill in deeper scratches with hard wax. It is sold in the form of pencils of colors of various wood species, requires warming up before use.

Waxes of different colors can be mixed to obtain the desired shade

Sand the edges of the scratch, degrease and dust. Melt the wax and apply with a spatula to the damage with a margin. After hardening, remove excess and polish the surface with felt.

By mixing waxes of different colors, you can achieve the desired color scheme, suitable for a particular coating.

Doors with significant damage can be painted. To do this, first of all, you need to remove the protective coating and give the surface a matte finish for better adhesion (adhesion).

  1. Sand the canvas with a fine-grained sandpaper using a grinder with a nozzle or by hand.
  2. Clean the surface from dust and prime. Choose a primer with good adhesion to any surface (polyurethane based).
  3. Seal cracks, chips and other imperfections with latex putty or epoxy.
  4. Sand the restorations and prime again.
  5. Cover the door with polyurethane paint or alkyd enamel using a velor roller.
  6. Paint the profile edges with a narrow beveled brush.
  7. Let the paint dry and apply another coat.
  8. Cover the surface with varnish. It will protect the paint from scratches and abrasion.

A less troublesome option is pasting with foil or veneer. In this case, it is important not to rush, to act carefully so that no air bubbles remain under the coating. Pre-sanding and priming is also required. Painting and pasting of plastic doors is carried out according to the same scheme.

The veneer is glued to the surface using a heated iron

The top layer of the laminate is a high strength plastic with very poor adhesion.

Metal door restoration

Metal doors are most often installed at the entrance, where they are exposed to external influences. If the door is painted, then after a while rust will inevitably appear on it.

Over time, rust appears on the metal door

The situation can be corrected, for this you will need:

  • iron brush;
  • sanding paper;
  • solvent;
  • primer;
  • paint;
  • brushes;
  • roller;
  1. Remove the fittings, seals, protection of the inner lining from the canvas.
  2. Use a wire brush to remove paint and rust.
  3. Sand the surface.
  4. Clean dust and degrease with solvent.
  5. Putty the defects and sandpaper again.
  6. Cover with a primer.
  7. Apply the first coat of paint and let dry.
  8. Repeat the process.

    You can completely transform an old metal door with your own hands.

  9. Replace the hardware and seal.

Video: painting a metal door with hammer paint

Much more often now you can find metal doors with a decorative strip. It can be laminate, MDF or wood. In this case, the restoration is carried out in the same way as for doors from the corresponding material. The cover can also be installed on an old canvas.

Replacing old hinges

We have already figured out how to remove the old loops. First, they remove the door, then unscrew the fasteners from the cards on the canvas and box. Or vice versa, if the hinges are one-piece.

It happens that the screws do not give in. In this case, you can try to moisten them with kerosene and wait a little. Or warm up with a hairdryer. In advanced cases, the fasteners will have to be drilled out.

Now you can install new hinges. But first you need to choose the right one. To give preference to a detachable or one-piece model is a matter of taste. One has only to take into account that it is easier to install a door with split doors on your own, without outside help.

What really matters is the choice of right or left hinges. Determining which ones you need is quite simple: stand in front of the door so that it opens on you. If the loops are on the right, then these are exactly what you need. If left, your option is left hinges.

Now it remains to install them. It happens that the old hinges are too deep in the box. In this case, the installation of a hardboard lining, cut according to the nest template, will help. The same is done on the canvas, if necessary.

The nest, which does not correspond to the new hinges, is increased to fit with a chisel. After that we fasten the card to the box with long screws. In a similar way, we install the top cards on the door leaf.

It remains only to install the canvas. Using an improvised lever made of scrap, a nail clipper or a board, we lift the door and connect the halves of the hinges.

Raise the canvas and connect the hinges

We check the performance of the structure and lubricate the hinges for quiet and smooth operation. For this purpose, modern aerosol lubricants are suitable, but you can also use the old old-fashioned way - graphite.

It is better to lubricate the hinges before installing the canvas.

Lift the door slightly and slide a piece of soft pencil lead into the gap between the touching hinge parts. Open and close the door several times to turn the lead into powder. No squeaks and smooth running are provided.

Video: restoration of a wooden door

Do-it-yourself restoration will not only allow you to significantly save money. It is also a fun process that allows you to return the door to its original appearance or even improve it. And this is not such a difficult task. Arm yourself with patience, the necessary tools, follow the recommendations and you will succeed.

Do-it-yourself restoration of wooden windows and doors

A couple of decades ago, there was no question of any metal-plastic windows and doors. In each apartment there were good old "Soviet" windows, which were painted from year to year, and glued with newspapers or duct tape for the winter. With the doors - the same: touch up, rubbed glass - and all the repairs. With the development of building technologies, people can afford windows for every taste, color and wallet. Those who prefer only environmentally friendly materials put wooden ones, who do not want to spend too much - choose the simplest metal-plastic ones.

However, there are still many apartments and houses where, due to the numerous layers of paint, the pattern on the platbands, and even on the doors themselves, is no longer visible. You can also find old wooden windows, where instead of glazing beads there is old loose putty and bloated, in places peeling paint. You can breathe new life into them.

If you do everything yourself and do not involve specialists, then the restoration of wooden doors will cost you 10, or even 15 times cheaper than buying new ones. In addition, the new door must be skinned, varnished or putty and painted in the same way, hinges and handles must be cut into it in the same way. Therefore, if you have just wooden, not pressed doors, then do not rush to throw them away.

The restoration of wooden windows is practically the same as the restoration of doors. You just have to buy all the outdoor materials that are weatherproof. Restoration of windows is more "jewelry", everything needs to be done carefully, you can get hurt and spoil the glass.

The restoration technology of windows and doors depends on their condition. You can simply sand the old varnish and, if everything is in order, cover the product with a new one. You can also vice versa: remove five layers of old paint from the door, then cut out its rotten areas with a jigsaw, insert others, putty and paint. The topic of my article is the restoration of neglected windows and doors.

When installing an interior door yourself, there are many nuances and features. The most common ones will be announced in the instructions.

Definition with dimensions

It is best to measure the prepared doorway when the old door leaf along with the frame has already been removed. This is the only way to get the right result. To measure, it is necessary to determine the narrowest point and measure the width and length of the opening along the wall. So, the dimensions outside the door frame should be less than the measured value. If, for example, a value equal to 78 cm is obtained, then the block is installed with parameters of 70 cm, since the wider version will no longer fit into this opening. Usually, builders immediately set standard sizes in apartments, so it will not be difficult to choose a door from the assortment presented in the store.

If it is necessary to install a door in a non-standard opening, an individual order will be required.

Toolkit preparation

After the desired door has been purchased, you must immediately prepare the tools that you will need during work:

  • hammer drill or drill with drills 3 and 4 mm
  • drills for a concrete wall 4 and 6 mm
  • screwdriver
  • wood screws
  • saw or jigsaw
  • construction level and plumb line
  • roulette
  • pencil
  • polyurethane foam.

Assembling the box

The technology for installing an interior door involves the initial trimming of the racks to the length of the doorway. The evenness of the floor is measured with a level, if the characteristic is satisfactory, then the racks are performed the same. When calculating, it is important to understand that the racks are always 1 - 2 cm longer than the canvas itself, taking into account the cuts, and there is a gap of 1 cm under the door.

After determining the length of the racks, the lintel is sawn off, the length is greater than the indicator of the width of the door leaf. Additionally, a clearance of 7 - 8 mm is included in the length, which is distributed:

  • 5 - 6 mm - on the hinge structure
  • 2, 5 - 3 mm - compensation type gaps.

Since the doors are made of wood that changes their original dimensions, the gaps will allow the leaf to open freely under any conditions. After collecting the box. Methods for connecting the strips to each other:

  1. At an angle of 45 °. This solution is the most correct and aesthetically correct, but also heavy in execution due to the high precision of the cut to avoid cracks. You can make such cuts using a carpenter's miter box. Chipping can become an unpleasant moment, so the tool is used only as sharp as possible. Next, three holes are drilled on each side. So, it turns out that 2 holes are on top at a distance of 1 cm from the edge and 1 on the side in the middle. Self-tapping screws are twisted perpendicular to the connection.
  2. At an angle of 90 °. In this option, it is more difficult to make a mistake, but you need to remove the protrusions at the junction of the lintel and the racks. For this, a lintel is placed in the corner with a rather large margin. Remove all unnecessary with a chisel. Expose an even angle. In a fixed position, holes are drilled, a few millimeters smaller in diameter than a self-tapping screw. Observing the angle clearly and excluding the relief, they connect this knot.

If the setting of a threshold is meant, then the box turns out to be similar not to the letter P, but to a rectangle. For the threshold, you need to correctly determine the location. This is done after collecting the U-shaped box and applying the canvas to it. 2.5 mm recede from it and a threshold is attached to this place.

Assemble the parts on the floor.

Cutting in hinges and installing fittings

Do-it-yourself installation of an interior door involves inserting 2 hinges, but in some cases there may be 3 hinges. They are placed at a distance of 20-25 cm from the top and bottom of the door leaf.

The attachment point should not contain knots if the door is made of solid wood.

To begin with, the hinges are mounted on the door leaf according to the following algorithm:

  1. Applying loops in the desired places, outlining their contour with a well-sharpened pencil or blade.
  2. Cutting with a milling cutter or chisel along the contour.
  3. Installation of the hinge into the groove exactly with the surface of the web.
  4. Loop fixation with self-tapping screws.

After the canvas is placed in a box, the necessary gaps are set on the side of the hinge mechanisms at 6 mm, in the upper part and on the opposite side - at 3 mm, fixed with wedges. Mark the places on the box where the second part of each loop will be located. After that, a recess for the hinges is created on the door frame.

As a rule, interior doors are sold without handles. Therefore, in the process of installing an interior door with your own hands, you will have to think about this. The location of the handle is determined by the owner depending on his height and ease of use. As a standard, a handle and a lock, if it is supposed, are attached to the canvas at a distance of 0.9 to 1.2 m from the floor. This is the most convenient place for the average person to use.

Box installation

Before installing the door frame of the interior door, you need to knock out everything in the opening that may interfere with installation or fall off. In the case of problematic walls, they are pre-treated with deep penetration primers. If there are large holes, they are sealed with a plaster mixture. A prepared opening is a step towards the correct installation of an interior door.

After preparation, the door frame is exposed with a check of its verticality not only with a level, but also with a plumb line. It is installed in such a way that the canvas subsequently creates a single plane with the wall. If the wall is not even, then the door frame is not positioned along it, but vertically.

In order to avoid skewing, before putting the door, temporary spacers are mounted on the floor in the door frame, giving it greater rigidity.

After the selected position of the door frame, it is fixed with mounting wedges made of wood or plastic, which are placed on both sides of the lintel and above the racks. The verticality of the fixed door frame is checked. At this stage, a sheet is inserted into the box and the possibility of unhindered opening of the door is checked. If everything suits you, then you can start fixing.

There are several ways to attach the door frame to the opening:

  • right through the wall
  • mounting plates.

The first type is more reliable, but leaves behind visible fastener caps on the box. To fix the interior door, it will be enough to install two self-tapping screws in the hinge recesses in the box and the area for the lock on the other side. In this case, you need to ensure that the head of the screws is buried in the material and does not interfere with the installation of the hinges. Door frames are now also available with decorative strips that hide the attachment points.

To install an interior door in this way, you will need to drill holes in the concrete with a drill for screws. If desired, you can drill through holes in other parts of the box, and cover their location with matching pads.

The second method is to pre-fasten the mounting plates from the back of the box, which help fix the door. This option allows you to skip drilling the door frame and wall.

Hanging the canvas

Thus, after installing the box, you can start foaming the gaps between it and the wall.Before this, the wall must be moistened with water for better polymerization of the polyurethane foam. The amount of material is needed that fills the space by no more than 2/3. If you squeeze more, the foam can blow the box inward.

To avoid deformation of the box when foaming, it is worth installing spacers.

The foam curing time is indicated on the packaging and may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. As soon as the substance has completely hardened, the spacers are removed, the door leaf is hung and the operation of the new door is checked.

Finishing the finished door

The doorway after installing the doors in the apartment requires additional finishing to make it more decorative. There are several options here:

  1. With a thin wall - installation of platbands covering the foamed area. They are fastened with nails without a cap or screws with special plugs.
  2. With a wide wall - installation of platbands and an additional strip, which is cut to the width and mounted on construction silicone. Platbands in this case are installed in the same way as in the previous case.

Installing an interior door according to step-by-step instructions is a difficult process that requires some skill. But, if all the features are taken into account during installation, then it is quite possible to do this without the need to contact specialists.

A few tips from professionals

Much depends on the careful selection and careful installation of door structures. It's not just aesthetics. Well-chosen designs will serve faithfully for decades.

It is better to have an assistant when installing the door.

  • it is not worth buying doors that have coating defects, with further use, even small irregularities will become a big problem
  • unfortunately, Russian manufacturers have a low quality of operation
  • in the store, you need to measure the door from all sides, deviations from the correct geometric parameters indicate an unimportant quality of the product
  • it is necessary to assess the reliability of fixing the glass on the door leaf, rattling is not allowed
  • Turkish and Chinese doors with glass are not the best choice, glasses are very fragile
  • irregularities in the joints of the door parts indicate marriage.

The door can become a real interior decoration

Choosing a manufacturer

Taking into account the economic state of the world, in order to preserve the purchasing power of the population, manufacturers are trying to combine the quality and low cost of door leaves. In this segment of marketable products, the following countries are positively characterized by:

  • Israel - the product is of high quality, sophistication, durability
  • Finland - simplicity and lack of decoration distinguish the craftsmen of this country, who prefer the natural light color of the product

To keep all the strips completely straight, cut off the excess tape with a utility knife.

After you've painted the surface of the door next to the tape, you can continue using the roller. Caution: Avoid roller movements that could get ink under the tape.

Be patient and wait for the paint to dry completely. Depending on the composition, this takes from 24 to 48 hours.

A fun decorative idea - you can add a door knocker to the door handles.

I hope my story on how to update interior doors with your own hands will be useful to you.

How to update an old door with your own hands: do you have your own life hacks that you could share with your readers?

The structure of the block itself is also important.

  • Both sashes open in both directions - a double-leaf system. In this case, a wide doorway is required: the width of the leaf (1st sash) * 4 + 10 cm.
  • One door moves in both directions along the wall: the doorway is equal to double the width of the door leaf.
  • One sash goes into another (cassette): the doorway is calculated in the same way. When assembling with your own hands, the false wall is the most difficult part.

Installing a sliding interior structure with your own hands is an easier job compared to installing a swing one. The requirements for the doorway in this case are also simpler.

Self-installation of the door block is carried out after the end of all work where water or aqueous solutions are involved: putty, painting, and so on. High humidity leads to deformation of the door leaf.

  • Since the guides are not mounted in the opening, but on it, the state of the opening itself does not really matter. The walls should be exactly vertical, along which the interior doors will move.
  • If the walls are sheathed with plasterboard, some of the sheathing should be removed from the intended area - twice the area of the doorway. It is not recommended to install the structure on walls containing wires and water pipes.
  • If it is planned to mount the first design option, that is, with a lower guide, then a rough floor must be laid in the room. For the second option, the condition of the floor does not matter. The photo shows the second type of door block.

  • Aluminum profile - 2 m.
  • Rollers - suspended or / and support, depending on the type of construction.
  • Stoppers with padding for shock absorption.
  • Mounting kit.
  • The door leaf is to the taste and desire of the owner. The system can withstand loads of up to 100 kg, so the choice of door is practically unlimited.
  • Wooden beam 40 * 40 mm.

To assemble an interior door with your own hands you will need:

  • electric drill, screwdriver
  • hacksaw for metal, building level
  • system fixing kit.

Assembling a sliding system with a lower guide

To successfully install interior doors, you must carefully follow the instructions that come with the roller system. The assembly can be done independently, but it is recommended to invite an assistant, since the door leaf has considerable weight and cost, and its damage is undesirable.

  1. At the height of the canvas, a wooden plank is attached in the opening - this is the basis for fastening the upper part of the frame.
  2. The length of the guide is calculated depending on the type of construction and the width of the web. On the side of the opening where movement is limited - one moving sash, the profile should protrude 50 mm from the border of the opening.
  3. The bottom profile is attached to the floor. The floor and the upper cut of the opening must be strictly parallel - the deviation is no more than 5 mm, otherwise the sash will slide to the side.
  4. The rollers are fixed on the door leaf, according to the instructions - the fasteners are supplied in the kit. Then the web with rollers is inserted into the lower profile. Along the upper edge of the canvas, a line for installing the upper part of the frame is marked. This is a more visual method, and it also allows you to immediately determine whether the rollers are correctly mounted, and how freely the door leaf moves.
  5. The upper rail is attached to the wooden plank with self-tapping screws. Then both stoppers are installed, and the profile is closed with a decorative strip.
  6. A second set of rollers is mounted in the upper part of the door leaf.
  7. The door is wound under the decorative strip. The rollers are fixed in the profile, then the web is lifted, and the lower rollers are brought into the lower guide.

When installing the structure according to the second option - a suspended door, work is carried out to install only the upper rail. In the video, the process of assembling a sliding system with your own hands is shown in detail.
