Sole rosso is translated from Italian as “the sun is red”. Another Dutch creation that delights us with its beauty is the Solerosso tomato hybrid. Scarlet tomatoes shining in the sun look beautiful and appetizing, in many countries they are grown on an industrial scale. Why is this tomato so interesting? Does it deserve a place in our favorite garden beds?
The hybrid was created by scientists from the Dutch company Nunhems. Her specialization is selection, production, processing and wholesale of seeds for professional cultivation. Representative offices are open in all countries where vegetable growing is developed.
Nunems is one of the top five seed companies in the world. There is also a division in Russia, a Russian-language website has been launched. The Solerosso hybrid passed variety trials in the Russian Federation, was officially recognized as a breeding achievement and in 2005 was entered into the State Register with admission to cultivation in all regions.
On the Nunems website, Solerosso is listed as an industrial tomato. It grows as a low determinant bush, it does well without a garter and pinching, it is suitable for collection by hand and by combines. There is one drawback - in arid and hot regions, irrigation is necessary. Otherwise, the fruits will grow small and baked in the sun.
The hybrid is early ripening, ripening occurs 90–95 days after germination. The fruits are ovoid, small - 50–90 g each, but there are so many of them on the bushes that ordinary gardeners in their personal plots get tired of harvesting by hand. From 1 m², 8 kg of small tomatoes are collected, and with good care - 3 kg or more from a bush. In full ripeness, they are scarlet, all of the same size, they look very beautiful in a vase fresh and canned in jars.
Crop Solerossos are grown on an industrial scale without garters and pinching.
The peel of Solerosso tomatoes is strong, does not burst on bushes and in brines, the pulp is dense, inside there are only two seed chambers filled with juice. Purpose of fruits: preparation of tomato juice and paste, whole-fruit canning and fresh consumption in the period when the later large and fleshy varieties have not yet ripened. No odes are sung about the taste of this hybrid, it is an ordinary tomato, there is neither bright saccharin nor sourness.
Solerosso tomatoes are dense and juicy
Among the positive qualities that are appreciated by farmers: resistance to fungal diseases, presentation, transportability, excellent keeping quality.
This hybrid really turned out to be not only quite large and dense, but also tasty and mature. During our visit to the farmer, for the fourth day in the open air he had collected tomatoes in boxes, waiting for enough ripe fruits to load the car. But almost all the fruits remained firm and fragrant, and there were only a few softened ones per 14-kilogram box.
But not without a "fly in the ointment", and this hybrid eventually showed a serious flaw. It is not resistant to viral diseases (mosaic, curly leaves, bronze), against which drugs have not yet been invented. In addition, like all hybrids, Solerosso, which was at its peak in the early 2000s, is now out of fashion, giving way to new products.
Solerosso is grown by farmers in the open field, we have a lot in the field at the beginning of August. Dealers for Muscovites love to take a seaming tomato. But in recent years, the fashion for him is leaving. Collect it with lobes and therefore a lot of chipped in boxes and from there then a lot of waste. Small tomato-50 grams, the taste also depends on the weather and on the type of soil where it grew.
The agricultural technology of Solerosso differs in that it is very simple and can consist of only two points:
Sow the hybrid in March - early April. Dutch seeds germinate well, Solerosso seedlings are compact, do not require large containers. You can even exclude picking by sowing one seed at a time in the cups. Top dressing is also optional, because small plants consume very little food. But if the soil was taken infertile, the bushes do not grow at all, then pour 1-2 times with an interval of 10-14 days with a solution of a complex mixture for seedlings: Fertika, Agricola, etc.
Plant Solerosso in the open ground when all frosts have passed, and under the arches and covering material - 1-2 weeks earlier. Planting density - 4-5 plants per 1 m², approximate scheme - 30-40x50 cm. Fill the garden bed with compost or a complex mineral fertilizer, for example, nitroammophos, Gumi-Omi for tomatoes, etc.
You don't need to own a piece of land to grow this hybrid. It grows beautifully as a houseplant on windowsills and balconies. With LED lighting, these tomatoes can be grown at home all year round and sown whenever you like.
Even a child can get a harvest from Solerosso, since in care one should not forget about only one thing - watering. But there are already amazing results of the impact on the unpretentious tomato of high agricultural technology. It is in the field that the fruits grow small, and hardworking gardeners on their own plots managed to grow 200-gram tomatoes. To repeat and even beat this record:
When grown in spread, that is, without a garter, fruits and leaves will lie on the ground. In sunny Ukraine and in the south of the Russian Federation, where sandy soils prevail, this may not be harmful. However, in regions with frequent rains, tomatoes growing on loam, if they do not get sick, will lose their beautiful appearance. From adhering dirt, they will look more like root vegetables. Therefore, in the territories of risky farming, "lazy technology" is not quite suitable: you need to either tie up the bushes, or cover the ground with dry straw.
And I, as a resident of Siberia, would plant such tomatoes in buckets and put them along the house in the blind area. Let them hang over the edge. The bottom is still asphalt and no dirt.
Solerosso is a very productive and unpretentious hybrid from Holland. It is so versatile that it grows well in any climate of the Russian Federation, in the beds of novice gardeners and in professional fields. Tomato pleases with the harvest even when planting a house in a flower pot.
Alsou tomatoes are large-fruited and very tasty, so they are perfect for fresh consumption and adding to salads. They also make delicious juices, ketchups, sauces. They can be used in processed form for canning with other vegetables. But you won't be able to pickle such tomatoes whole in jars because of their large size.
