Step-by-step strawberry processing: pest control and disease prevention

Strawberries, like any other crop, need measures aimed at supporting its development, one of which is spring treatment for diseases and pests. For this procedure to be successful, it is necessary to use suitable means, as well as familiarize yourself with the basic rules for their use.

Why process strawberries in spring

Spring processing of strawberries is mostly of an auxiliary and preventive nature, since during its implementation it is not recommended to use potent poisonous drugs, so as not to spoil the future harvest with them. However, this event should not be neglected, because the treatment not only prevents the appearance of diseases, but also partially fertilizes the strawberry bushes.

Means for spring processing of strawberries

There are a large number of tools with which you can carry out preventive treatment of strawberries in the spring.

Ammonia

Salmon is popular among gardeners and is often used as a preventive measure against various pests (beetle larvae, ants) and fungi.

Ammonia can be used not only for the prevention of strawberry diseases, but also as a fertilizer.

The composition of the solution: laundry soap (1 piece, 72%), a bottle of ammonia (40 ml) and water (10 l). Preparation is carried out as follows:

  1. Rub the soap on a grater and pour in a small amount of boiling water.
  2. Stir the soap so that it dissolves completely.
  3. Pour soap solution into a bucket of water in a thin stream, stirring constantly. There should be no soap flakes in the water.
  4. Add ammonia to soapy water and mix everything.

The prepared solution must be used immediately, because the ammonia evaporates quickly. It is poured from a watering can with a spray nozzle not only on strawberry leaves, but also on the ground in order to remove pest larvae.

Precautions

Since ammonia is a toxic substance, then when working with it, take precautions so as not to harm your health:

  • Protect your face with a mask or respirator and your hands with rubber gloves. Try not to leave open areas on the body;
  • if possible, carry out all preparatory work outdoors. When working indoors, open windows to ensure maximum ventilation. If you are cultivating strawberries in a greenhouse, then also do it with the doors open;
  • if ammonia gets on your skin, wash the affected area with soap and water. If the ammonia gets inside, then drink a glass of milk. See a doctor if necessary.

Preventive treatment

Treatment with ammonia solution is carried out in two stages.

Moisten the strawberry garden generously with warm water before applying any fertilizer.

Perform the first treatment from mid to late April, immediately after the snow has melted:

  1. If you have not removed the garden in the fall, then clean it of old leaves and mulch, and also cut off the bushes.
  2. Treat them with a prepared solution. For spraying, it is advisable to use a sprayer with wide openings so that the solution pours out faster and the alcohol does not have time to evaporate.

The second treatment is carried out from late May to early June, immediately after flowering strawberries. For the solution, a lower concentration of ammonia is needed - only two to three tablespoons per 10 liters of warm water. The procedure is recommended to be carried out in the evening or in cloudy weather, so as not to burn the leaves. Please note that it is not recommended to use such a solution at the time of berry ripening, so do not hesitate to re-process it.

Copper sulfate

Copper sulfate is an affordable and effective remedy that is successfully used in the prevention of various diseases of strawberries (scab, gray rot, powdery mildew, spotting), as well as in pest control. For preventive purposes, a one percent solution is used. Processing must be carried out in early or mid-April, until leaves appear on the strawberries.

Copper sulfate crystals have a bright blue color

The composition of the solution: 100 g of copper sulfate, 10 liters of water. This amount of ingredients is enough to prepare a solution designed to process 25-30 strawberry bushes. The drug is made in this way:

  1. In a small amount of hot, but not boiling water, dilute the powder until it is completely dissolved.
  2. The resulting mixture is diluted with warm water so that 10 liters of solution are obtained.

The solution should be used immediately after preparation. Spray the strawberries again after 2-3 weeks if necessary. Processing is carried out in the evening or in cloudy calm weather so as not to burn the leaves that have appeared.

Inkstone

Iron sulfate is also successfully used by many gardeners in the spring garden processing. It is generally used as a soil disinfectant in strawberry beds. With this drug, you can prevent the appearance of anthracnose, gray rot, downy mildew and common powdery mildew.

Iron vitriol crystals are pale green in color.

The composition of the soil treatment solution: 400 g of powder, 10 liters of water. With this solution, you need to process the garden bed 5-7 days before planting strawberry bushes on it, pouring 4-5 liters per hole. The tool is prepared as follows:

  1. Dilute the powder in 1 liter of hot water until the granules are completely dissolved.
  2. The resulting mixture is mixed with hot water so that 10 liters of solution are obtained.

If you want to process already planted bushes, then you will need a solution of a lower concentration. It is important to have time to carry out the processing before the green leaves appear on the strawberries, so this procedure should be carried out from the beginning to mid-April.

Ingredients: 30 g of powder, 10 l of water, the preparation method is the same. Water the ground around the strawberry bushes.

Boiling water

As gardeners note, the use of boiling water is a reliable way to combat ticks, nematodes and fungal spores.

Strawberries are treated with boiling water from late March to mid-April, when green leaves have not yet appeared on the bushes:

  1. Heat the water almost to a boil.
  2. Then it is poured into a cold watering can with a shower head.
  3. Planting is watered. For one bush, 0.5 liters of water is enough.

Do not be afraid that you will burn the plant: when water gets on it, its temperature will be 65-70 aboutC, upon reaching the roots - 30 aboutFROM.

Urea

Urea is better known as a mineral fertilizer, but it is quite possible to process the aerial parts of strawberries with it in order to get rid of aphids, copperweed, weevils, and also to protect bushes from spotting and scab.

Urea is used as a protective agent against pests and diseases in strawberries

The composition of the solution: 30-40 g of urea, 10 liters of water. Urea is diluted in water until completely dissolved. Spraying is usually carried out before the appearance of green leaves - in the period from early to mid-April.

Iodine

Iodine has been used by more than one generation of gardeners as a prophylactic agent against powdery mildew and May beetle larvae. Processing is carried out from mid-April to early May, always before the beginning of flowering strawberries.

Use iodine when processing strawberries with care so as not to harm the plant.

The composition of the solution: 10 drops of iodine, 1 liter of milk, 10 liters of water. Processing is best done in the evening or in cloudy weather.

Some sources warn that the use of iodine can negatively affect the composition of the soil. Its toxic vapors also accumulate in the plant itself, including in the fruits, so do not carry out iodine treatments and fertilizing often and do not use a highly concentrated solution.

Boric acid

As a rule, boric acid solution is used to prevent diseases such as root rot and bacteriosis. In addition, gardeners using this product claim that it helps to increase yields.

The use of boric acid helps to increase the yield of strawberries

The composition of the solution: 1 g of boric acid (powder), 10 liters of water. Make a solution as follows:

  1. Heat water up to 60-70 aboutC - granules do not dissolve in cold water.
  2. Pour boric acid granules into the container and mix thoroughly.
  3. Shrubs are watered at the root (300 ml of solution is enough for one plant) and sprinkle the ground with a thin layer of ash.

Processing can be carried out from mid-April to mid-May.

Do not get carried away with the use of this tool: experts note that frequent processing and feeding can lead to the death of the strawberry root and damage to the leaves (they turn yellow and become convex in the center).

Strawberry pests and control measures

Spring processing of strawberries will help control most garden pests.

Weevil

The weevil is a widespread pest of strawberries. This small gray-black bug is capable of causing significant damage to the crop: experts say that bushes affected by weevils give 40% less berries than healthy ones.

The weevil infects the flower buds of strawberries, so its presence in the garden can completely deprive the crop.

Weevils do not infect the berries themselves, but flower buds, therefore, even ovaries may not appear on the infected shrub.

To combat this pest, the following means are often used:

  • mustard solution (100 g of mustard powder is mixed with 3 liters of hot water);
  • ash and soap solution (mix 40 g of laundry soap, 3 kg of ash and 10 liters of water);
  • special preparations (Karbofos, Atellix, Metaphos).

You need to carry out processing two times:

  1. The first time is in the spring, 5 days before flowering (usually in late May or early June).
  2. The second time is in the summer in the first two weeks of June.

Mite

Strawberries are often attacked by strawberry and spider mites.

Strawberry mite

This pest is very small in size, so you are unlikely to notice it on strawberry bushes. Its presence is evidenced by the following symptoms: wrinkling of leaves and their acquisition of a yellow tint, a decrease in yield. In addition, the affected bushes lose their frost resistance and may not survive the winter.

A sign of the defeat of the strawberry bush by a strawberry mite is the presence of bulges on the leaves.

Spring treatment for this pest in various ways is carried out from early April to mid-May:

  1. Boiled water is processed in early or mid-April. Optimum water temperature - 65 aboutC, consumption - 0.5 liters of water per bush.
  2. Spraying with concentrated onion infusion is carried out from the end of April to mid-May, when leaves appear on the strawberries:
    • soak 200 g of onion husks in 1 liter of boiling water and infuse for 5 days;
    • then add 9 liters of warm water and spray the bushes with a spray bottle, paying special attention to the inside of the leaves - the mite most often hides there;
    • after processing, cover the garden for several hours with a film;
    • repeat the treatment 2-3 times every 10 days.
  3. Treatment with special preparations (for example, Karbofos) is carried out until the strawberries begin to bloom:
    • prepare the drug according to the instructions and process the shrubs, including the inner side of the leaves;
    • for greater efficiency, the bed is also covered with a film.

Spider mite

Like other mites, the spider mite is small and therefore almost invisible. Signs of damage to the bush by this pest are the presence of white spots on the inside of the leaves and the cobweb running from the stem to the leaves. In addition, the plant weakens and loses its ability to resist other diseases. This is especially dangerous, since spider mites are carriers of infections (in particular, gray mold).

Strawberries lose their ability to resist infections due to spider mites

Spring processing takes place from mid-April to mid-May and includes the following procedures:

  1. Spraying with a 1% solution of copper sulfate.
  2. Processing with onion or garlic infusion:
    • finely chopped 100-200 g of onions or garlic pour 10 l heated to 70 aboutFrom the water;
    • insist during the day;
    • then spray the shrubs with a spray bottle;
    • cover with foil for several hours;
    • repeat the treatment 2-3 more times every 10 days.
  3. Spraying with onion peel solution (prepared in the same way as for treatment against strawberry mites).
  4. Processing with infusion of red bitter pepper:
    • grind 100 g of dried pepper, pour 1 liter of boiling water and leave for 2-3 hours;
    • then diluted with 9 liters of warm water;
    • treat the shrub;
    • cover the garden for several hours with foil;
    • processing is carried out 2-3 times with an interval of 10 days.
  5. Use of a special drug Karbofos (the recommendations are the same as against the strawberry mite).

Pennitsa

If a foam like spitting appears on your bushes, this is a sign that the strawberry is affected by a penny. The pest is not considered too dangerous, but its presence also leads to the weakening of the plant and a decrease in its yield.

The foamy mass contains pennitsa larvae

You need to process the bushes from early April to mid-May. The following tools are suitable:

  • potassium permanganate solution (dissolve 5 g of powder in 10 l of water heated to 70 aboutFROM);
  • infusion of garlic (prepared and used according to general rules);
  • special drug Karbofos (used according to the instructions).

Try to pay more attention to the back of the leaves, as this is where the penny is hiding.

Chafer

Strawberry bushes are often affected by the May beetle. The larvae of this insect live in the soil and feed on the roots of strawberries, so the plant weakens and withers, which means it reduces its yield.

May beetle larvae live in the soil at a depth of 50-60 cm and spoil strawberry roots

To prevent this, in the period from late April to mid-May, it is necessary to process the beds. For this event, use the following tools:

  1. Ammonia. Prepare a solution (0.5 tablespoons of ammonia + 10 liters of water) and spill the garden well.
  2. Onion peel:
    • pour 100 g of onion husks with 1 liter of boiling water, dilute in 9 liters of warm water and leave for 3-5 days;
    • before processing, dilute the solution by half with water and water the shrubs at the root;
    • Zemlin, Barguzin and other preparations containing diazinon - the only soil insecticide - according to the instructions.
  3. Mulching. For mulch, use sawdust or leaf litter with a layer of at least 5 cm.But keep in mind that mulching is carried out exclusively for preventive purposes. If there are pests in the soil, then you must first destroy them, and then pour mulch.

Strawberry is the common name for wild strawberry. Strawberries are one of the most favorite berries of both children and adults. It has a bright appearance, sweet taste and pleasant aroma. Strawberries are equally tasty in their original form and as jam, jams, frozen. Strawberries are used as an adjunct drug in the treatment of hypertension, eczema, anemia. Many diets have been developed based on this berry. It is also widely used in cosmetology.

Processing strawberries in the spring for diseases and pests.

It is fairly believed that strawberries grown at their summer cottage are the most delicious. To grow a good harvest of tasty, large and sweet berries, you need to take care of them. One of the stages of care includes processing strawberries in spring from diseases and pests. What can you use?

How to treat strawberries in spring from diseases and pests

Chemical pesticides, biological agents, or prepared according to folk recipes - all of these can be used to treat strawberry bushes from diseases and pests. Each of these groups of drugs has advantages and disadvantages.

Chemicals for processing garden strawberries

The main advantage of pesticides is speed and high efficiency. It is advisable to use them if you urgently need to get rid of pests and there are already a lot of them, and also if the severity of the signs of the disease clearly indicates that it will not be possible to cope with it with folk remedies.

However, it is chemical preparations that turn out to be the most harmful to plants, soil, beneficial insects, and they can be used only before the beginning of flowering, but not at all during the fruiting period. When working with pesticide solutions, wear protective clothing, gloves, goggles and a gauze bandage. There should be no children or animals nearby.

The following insecticides and fungicides can be used to protect strawberries from pests and diseases:

  1. Inta-Vir (1 tablet per 7 liters of water) - spray the bushes from the weevil before flowering.
  2. Slug-eater and StopUlit (from slugs, snails) are scattered around the bushes (5 g per 1 sq. M).
  3. Colloidal sulfur (for 10 liters 2 tablespoons) is used to protect against common diseases during the growing season, when signs of illness appear.
  4. Fundazol (10 g per 10 l) - treatment before flowering from powdery mildew and gray rot.
  5. Copper oxychloride (30 g per 10 liters of water) or Bordeaux mixture - 3% solution for early spring treatment and 1% - used before flowering and after picking berries - protection against leaf spot.
  6. Topaz (1 ampoule per bucket) - from rust and powdery mildew, the first treatment is carried out during the budding period and the second after the completion of the harvest.

There are also substances that have both fungicidal and insecticidal effects. This is copper sulfate, which not only destroys fungi and pests, but also feeds plants with copper - an important element for them. Vitriol protects against a number of fungal diseases. Recipe: for 10 liters of water, take 30 g of vitriol and 40 g of soap. Spray before young leaves begin to appear in the outlets.

Iodine for strawberries is used for diseases with rot and spotting, powdery mildew, late blight, as well as for harmful insects - aphids and weevils. From pests, spray with an aqueous solution of iodine tincture (prepare a liquid from 10 liters of water and 5 drops of tincture) 3 times before flowering at regular intervals. From late blight - 40 drops of tincture and 1 tbsp. l. hydrogen peroxide.

Biological agents

They are less toxic than chemical insecticides, and some of them are generally harmless. They contain bacteria and fungi that are capable of stopping the multiplication of pathogens, and then completely destroying them.

You can process strawberries from diseases and pests:

  1. Fitoverm - from raspberry-strawberry weevil and spider mite (1 ampoule per 1 liter). The treatment is carried out until the buds appear, the protective effect remains, depending on the current weather, for 5-15 days.
  2. Fitosporin - it not only protects, but also increases crop yields. Water the plants with a fresh solution, which has stood for about 0.5 hours before use. Fitosporin is used for powdery mildew, phytophthora, root rot, and rust.
  3. Trichodermin. The saprophytic bacteria of the drug not only destroy, but also process the remnants of pathogens, accelerate the growth of plants and increase their immunity. Solution for processing: for 5 liters of 5 g of the drug.
  4. Aktofit - from strawberry mites and weevils (20 g per 10 l) during the growing season after the appearance of the pest.

Spraying strawberries in spring with biological preparations is done only at t above 18 ° C, they are most effective at t 24-32 ° C. Some biologics can be successfully combined with powerful pesticides, but before preparing such solutions, you need to find out if the individual drugs are compatible. Usually information about this is in their instructions. If it is absent, then you can mix some funds in a small container and see how the reaction goes. If there is no sediment, bubbling, foam, the temperature remains the same, then they are compatible. If the listed signs are present, then it is better not to risk it.

Folk remedies for processing garden strawberries

Many gardeners, opponents of watering the beds with chemicals, use folk remedies to process their plants. They are completely harmless, they act, albeit slowly, but quite effectively, they are allowed to be used all season, without restrictions. There are quite a few such remedies; they protect strawberries from pests or diseases.

Needle infusion

It is prepared from aphids and weevils. For 10 liters, take 2 kg of fresh needles, insist it for a week in a dark place. Then it is diluted 1 to 3 or 1 to 5.

Dandelion leaf infusion

Helps with strawberry mites. Recipe: For 10 liters of hot liquid, take 0.8 kg of chopped young leaves. Insist for 4-5 hours, drain and you can water.

Ammonia

The first spring processing of strawberries is carried out after the beginning of the growth of greenery. Solution: 1 bottle of 10 liters. Watered on the leaves and soil around the bushes from fungi, May beetle larvae living in the soil of nematodes. The second spraying of strawberries in early spring is carried out after the flowering of the bushes. This time, 3 tbsp is dissolved in 10 liters. l.

Wormwood and tobacco decoctions

They are used for spider mites. Recipe: for 10 liters of water, 2 kg of fresh wormwood herb, boil for 10 minutes, filter after cooling. Tobacco infusion is prepared in the same way as from wormwood.

Infusions with ash, potassium permanganate and boric acid

Recipe with ash: boil 0.3 kg of ash in a bucket of water for 0.5 hours. Insist, add up to 10 liters, add 40-50 g of soap.

Hot water with potassium permanganate (bright pink color) is shed by the bushes from the penny. Liquid with boric acid: 5 g of substance per 10 liters of water. Process in the spring, with budding and after - with the growth of berries. This will protect the plants, but also feed them with trace elements, as a result, an increase in yield can be achieved.

Ash, boron and potassium permanganate can be combined in one mixture. Take 30 drops of tincture in a bucket, 1 tbsp. l. ash powder and 1 tsp. acid. The bushes are sprayed with this liquid according to the following scheme: in early spring, before the flowers open and during the formation of the ovary.

Solution with iodine

It is used for spotting and other fungal infections. You can prepare 2 solutions (for 10 liters):

  • 10-15 drops + a little soap
  • 15-20 drops + 1 tbsp. serum.

This mixture can be combined with Fitosporin and other biological products. The number of treatments, depending on the neglect of the lesion - 2-3 per season.

Chemicals

The use of chemicals is advisable when symptoms of disease or damage to plants by insects appear. It is necessary to process the site in a protective mask and gloves. The action of some drugs is aimed at combating pathogenic microorganisms, others - with pests. There are means that have a complex effect and simultaneously eliminate both diseases and insect parasites.

From pests

  • Fitoverm - this biological insectoacaricide is effective against strawberry mites, aphids and other insects. To prepare a working solution, an ampoule of the drug is dissolved in 1 liter of water. The first time the beds are sprayed in early spring, when the first leaves appear. The second treatment of strawberry beds is carried out after 10 days.
  • Metaldehyde is an insecticide used to control slugs and snails. The product is produced in the form of blue granules, which attract pests with their smell and, upon direct contact, dry out the mucous membranes, which causes their death. In places where slugs were found, the ground is sprinkled with granules at the rate of 15 g per 5 m². The drug has a hazard class 3, it can harm humans and animals, especially dogs.
  • Thunderstorm - used against snails and slugs, it has a safer effect compared to the previous drug. The form of release is blue granules, which are sprinkled on the soil in the aisles of strawberries. Since Thunderstorm contains, apart from other substances, the substance Metaldehyde, care should be taken when carrying out treatments.
  • Karbofos - refers to insecticides, is available in the form of granules, powder or emulsion. It is used as a solution for spraying bushes in the fight against aphids, weevils, ticks and other insects. The working solution is prepared at the rate of 70 g of granules or powder per 10 liters of water.
  • Akarin - used to kill ticks, ants and aphids on strawberries. Acarin is sprayed on plants in the evening or morning. The optimum temperature for processing is 12-25 degrees Celsius. To prepare a solution, an ampoule with a volume of 4 ml is dissolved in 1 liter of water.

From disease

  • Copper sulfate - a preparation in the form of blue-blue crystals effectively eliminates fungal diseases (spotting, rust, powdery mildew and others). The product can also be used for foliar dressing, which makes it possible to replenish copper deficiency in plants, or to disinfect the soil. The working solution is prepared by diluting 10 g of crystals in a bucket of water.
  • Horus is a fungicide that is used for powdery mildew, fruit and gray rot, brown and white spot, as well as many other diseases of strawberries. It can be used as a therapeutic or prophylactic agent. Horus is used to spray the beds after the end of the frost, or when a disease is detected. It is better to use Horus when the air temperature does not exceed +10 degrees. The product is available in the form of a solution or dry powder. The working solution is prepared by dissolving 3 g of the drug in 10 liters of water.
  • Falcon is a fungicide developed on the basis of three active ingredients that have a complex effect in the fight against rust, powdery mildew and other diseases. Differs in a weak toxic effect and safety on pollinating insects. To prepare a solution for spraying strawberries, you will need 5 ml of fungicide and a bucket of water.
  • Strobi is an antifungal fungicide that can be sprayed on strawberries during flowering. The product is available in granules, is not washed off by rains, does not harm bees, animals and birds. It is used for black, white and brown spot, powdery mildew and other diseases. It has a protective effect for 1-2 weeks. The treatment solution is prepared by dissolving 2 g of granules in 10 liters of water.
  • Bordeaux liquid is an excellent remedy for powdery mildew, rust, rot, spotting. It is prepared at the rate of 100 g of lime per 100 g of copper sulfate. The listed components are dissolved in 1 liter of hot water in a separate container. Then the contents of both containers are brought to 5 liters, copper sulfate is poured into the pre-strained milk of lime. Strawberries with Bordeaux liquid are treated before flowering.
  • HOM - used for rust, spotting and many diseases of fungal origin. HOM treatment is carried out at a temperature not exceeding +30 ͦС. To prepare the working fluid, 40 g of the drug is dissolved in 10 liters of water.
  • Boric acid is a white powder that is present in many fertilizers. This substance improves plant nutrition, increases the yield and sugar content of strawberries, improves its resistance to various diseases, and has insecticidal properties. The product prevents fruit rotting, destroys ants that eat strawberries. To prepare a spray solution, 1 g of boric acid is stirred in a bucket of water.
  • Urea is a nitrogen fertilizer that has a depressing effect on fungi and many pests. For spraying strawberries, a 5% solution of urea (urea) is used.
