Greenhouses for vegetable gardens

Functions and location

Greenhouses for vegetable gardens are preparations or structures used in agriculture to protect and / or cultivate sheltered and confined crops, isolated from the outside and from adverse climatic conditions, improving the development environment during the crop cycle, exploiting and optimizing the transmission of direct solar radiation . In addition to repairing plants from excessive temperatures, light intensity and extreme atmospheric agents (frost, frost, hail, rain, wind), greenhouses for vegetable gardens represent a strategic solution on any type of soil to develop ordinary protected crops of vegetables at any time of the year, regardless of the climate and seasonality of the harvest, or in the period of late winter - early spring up to transplanting in the open field at the most appropriate. In fact, by conditioning the internal air conditioning and the seasonal period of normal harvesting, in these protective artifacts it is also possible to carry out agricultural practices of anticipated (early) or delayed (late) horticultural production (forced or semi-forced crops). Greenhouse vegetables are grown in the soil (directly or soilless, in containers at the bottom or on a pallet), while in hydroponics or hydroponics, in an inert and porous material (pumice, peat, perlite, etc.) with nutrient supply through micro-irrigation or sub-irrigation; the substrate is replaced by a liquid also nutritional in the floating culture (Floating system), closed cycle in the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT); in aeroponics, the plants supported by perforated plastic elements with their roots suspended in the dark are sprayed with mineral fertilizer solutions.

Determinant for the efficiency of greenhouses is their position in such a way that the exposure exploits the maximum of direct sunlight - a relevant factor in particular in the coldest periods - and, therefore, preferably at a distance from the shadow that extends from various impediments (buildings, trees, hedges, etc.). Due to the greenhouse effect, visible sunlight (short wave radiation) penetrates through the transparent coatings of the structure, infrared rays (long wave) are absorbed and remain trapped inside, thus keeping the ambient air heated and the increase in temperature within the protection of the roof and walls. This primary heating mechanism is interrupted by opening a window which, by ceasing the function of barrier to the air flow, automatically assumes that of a cooling system for the internal temperature. Starting in the morning, the sun's rays are absorbed by the cover and by the plants grown inside the greenhouse, maximizing plant development, so that the best position for an independent greenhouse is to be east-west and south-west or south in the leaning one. . Cold greenhouses exploit only the sun's rays, while temperate greenhouses are kept at a constant temperature between 10 ° -14 ° C and warm ones between 16 ° -20 ° C at night.

Types and materials

In addition to the space available in the garden and the consideration of the yield of the harvest, certain requirements (stability, mechanical resistance, type of service, durability, functions, etc.) of the numerous types of extraordinary constructions of greenhouses marketed with standardized structure or in kit version do-it-yourself, intended for a vegetable garden with a family or professional production orientation, require necessary preventive evaluations that are essential to any design and purchase.

Tunnel mini-greenhouses (width 2-4.5 m., Height about 2 m.) With a semicircular supporting structure mostly made of metal and plastic film cover represent functional seasonal protections for rows of plants from the beginning of cultivation or from the end. winter to the following autumn.

Bolted roofing for the vegetable garden as a solution of easy assembly and quick disassembly are the mobile greenhouses with a semi-circular or elliptical vault of different heights, with a steel arch frame (in two separate parts hooked together) surmounted by a cloth cover in flexible polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with UV ray filter or by a double PE sheet with low pressure air chamber to ensure greater insulation.

It takes advantage of a limited space, it is easy to access and with close availability of supplies (electricity, water, heat), the wall greenhouse leaning against an external wall of your home, which increases its stability, reduces heat losses and heating costs.

Freestanding viable structures let in more sunlight, but remain exposed to the wind and subject to heat loss. With single span, coupled or twinned modular double span without partition or multiple with battery, there are different construction characteristics: tunnel greenhouses with single arch (or mansard) continuous to the ground or with vertical side walls and curved or gothic roof, with roofing, heads and side walls in plastic film or sheets, or traditional models with one or more elements with flat roof pitches or vines (horizontal beam roof with small pitches) in glass or plastic film or sheet.

Greenhouses for vegetable gardens: Structure and systems

In addition to a foundation for permanent anchoring to the ground (fixed greenhouses) or temporary (mobile greenhouses), removable and reusable for the same purpose, the essential structural elements of the greenhouses for vegetable gardens consist of internal flooring, load-bearing or self-supporting structure with mounted and fixed cover, ventilation openings (wall and / or roof), access door (people, vehicles), various equipment, components and systems. A series of technological systems are designed to control the internal conditions of air conditioning both passive direct (natural lighting, openings for air exchange, etc.), and active (temperature, relative humidity, concentration of carbon dioxide, ventilation, light, etc.) and / or any other needs (irrigation and / or fertigation, disinfection, handling, automatisms, etc.).

Ordinary garden greenhouses rest on a masonry foundation (concrete, platform with self-locking tiles for outdoor use), on a curb on the perimeter of the ground or on a mobile support fixed to the ground. The load-bearing structure is mostly with an unalterable tubular aluminum or galvanized steel frame (anti-rust, corrosion-resistant) since the iron is less robust and the wood is easy to break, modify, require maintenance, etc. Colorless, high-transparency and long-lasting cover and walls are made of glass sheets and glossy or translucent fiberglass, single or double-walled, with high resilience and mechanical resistance, fixed to the load-bearing structure with joints (joints, joint covers, gaskets, bolts in aluminum, steel, rubber), or in rigid or semi-rigid plastic, smooth or corrugated resin, fiberglass, polyester, alveolar polycarbonate (PC) protected against UV rays (insulating, resistant, light), or in flexible polyethylene (PE) or ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA) films, also superimposed (greater mechanical and thermal resistance), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) also anti-drip, as well as special thermal PE with low linear density (PEBD). The glass is absolutely transparent, with thermal insulation, insensitive to solar radiation and combustion, unalterable by moisture and acids, but more fragile, heavy and expensive, while plastics generally deteriorate and have a shorter duration.

Depending on the size of the standardized greenhouse, the access door (hinged, sliding or tilting for agricultural machinery) is usually inserted in the header, single or double, with plastic or hermetic closure, or heads and sides that can be opened with cranks . The larger structures mount roof windows with manual or automatic opening, one or more lateral, single or double, gravity, vasistas, plastic or automated film winding and various accessories (workbench, cultivation benches in metal or masonry, walkways, shelves, etc.). Adequate openings to the outside are used to make air changes with a ventilating effect, to cool the temperature overheated by the heat of the sun, to decrease the humidity of the air to avoid the formation of internal condensation (ideal condition for the proliferation of fungal diseases that they would propagate quickly indoors) during the winter and keep the level of anhydride constant inside the greenhouse. A natural change of air can take place through special slits on the side of the roof, exhaust fans and motorized intake grilles, fans installed in parallel or in series at diagonally opposite corners and along the sides. By keeping the air forcibly circulating during the winter, the heated greenhouses remain at a uniform internal temperature, otherwise the heat flow would rise upwards, leaving the plants on the ground cold.

The heat requirement of a greenhouse - depending on the temperature required by the cultivated plants, the location and the type of construction - may require a heating system (electricity, gas, etc.) to maintain the desired degree of heat. In summer, greenhouse crops must instead be protected from heat and the intensity of light with natural and / or forced ventilation air exchange, an evaporative cooling system and external shading (roll-up roof screens in wood or aluminum, plastic material nets, etc.), interiors (plastic sheets, reeds, etc.) or specific temporary dyes.

In high-tech greenhouses, a series of structures, equipment and control systems with automated management regulate and program the additional artificial lighting system (fluorescent, mercury, sodium vapor, metal halide lamps, etc.) service and emergency, heating temperatures - via radiators, hot air generators, stoves (gas, diesel, electricity), alternative sources, etc. - and cooling (windows, shading, sliding tarpaulins), air conditioning (heat pump, evaporation stimulated by Cooling System fans, etc.), carbonation (enrichment of CO2 enhancing the chlorophyll photosynthesis process), relative humidity (irrigation by sprinkling, Fog System micro-misting), and handling (sliding and / or removable benches, etc.).

The installation of photovoltaic systems integrated into the greenhouse roofing is developing in the garden-nursery in a protected environment to make the structure independent in terms of energy without compromising crop productivity. The silicon photovoltaic panels on the south-facing pitches of fixed greenhouses (even pre-existing ones, without tampering with the supporting structure), moreover, efficiently replace the blackout screens. In this business sector, management, plants and control require, in fact, a considerable energy expenditure for production and post-harvest, but state, regional or national contributions and incentives are destined for agricultural development.
