Determinant for the efficiency of greenhouses is their position in such a way that the exposure exploits the maximum of direct sunlight - a relevant factor in particular in the coldest periods - and, therefore, preferably at a distance from the shadow that extends from various impediments (buildings, trees, hedges, etc.). Due to the greenhouse effect, visible sunlight (short wave radiation) penetrates through the transparent coatings of the structure, infrared rays (long wave) are absorbed and remain trapped inside, thus keeping the ambient air heated and the increase in temperature within the protection of the roof and walls. This primary heating mechanism is interrupted by opening a window which, by ceasing the function of barrier to the air flow, automatically assumes that of a cooling system for the internal temperature. Starting in the morning, the sun's rays are absorbed by the cover and by the plants grown inside the greenhouse, maximizing plant development, so that the best position for an independent greenhouse is to be east-west and south-west or south in the leaning one. . Cold greenhouses exploit only the sun's rays, while temperate greenhouses are kept at a constant temperature between 10 ° -14 ° C and warm ones between 16 ° -20 ° C at night.

Depending on the size of the standardized greenhouse, the access door (hinged, sliding or tilting for agricultural machinery) is usually inserted in the header, single or double, with plastic or hermetic closure, or heads and sides that can be opened with cranks . The heat requirement of a greenhouse - depending on the temperature required by the cultivated plants, the location and the type of construction - may require a heating system (electricity, gas, etc.) to maintain the desired degree of heat. In summer, greenhouse crops must instead be protected from heat and the intensity of light with natural and / or forced ventilation air exchange, an evaporative cooling system and external shading (roll-up roof screens in wood or aluminum, plastic material nets, etc.), interiors (plastic sheets, reeds, etc.) or specific temporary dyes.
