After all, only careful maintenance will guarantee you a clean, transparent pond with healthy inhabitants.

Reasons for pond pollution and solutions

Poor waterproofing

Sometimes the pollution of the reservoir can be associated with a violation of the waterproofing system. The concrete bottom or walls can crack and soil begins to enter through the cracks. The main reason for the appearance of cracks can be soil subsidence or improper composition of the concreting solution.

To eliminate this problem, you need to drain the pond, clean out the cracks and cover them with a sealant in two layers. Algae control

The principle of operation of cleaning filters consists of suction and filtration of water through skimmers, with filtration of debris from the bottom and surface of the pond.

The filter, of course, helps out. But to use it, you need to supply electricity, and this is not always possible

Using specialized vacuum cleaners

Do-it-yourself pond cleaning is possible using a special vacuum cleaner that collects debris both from the surface of the pond and from the bottom. The principle of operation of the vacuum cleaner consists of sucking in water, filtering through a special filter and removing already purified water through a hose from the other side.

Cleaning the pond from silt is carried out using a bottom vacuum cleaner, it resembles a conventional one, but without an internal cleaning filter. The bottom vacuum cleaner sucks water into the chamber and, when it is full, switches off automatically, the container must be emptied of silt.

How to prevent the appearance of turbidity in the reservoir?

Timely cleaning of reservoirs by the above methods will serve as a guarantee of the purity of the water surface and the health of its inhabitants. But if the pond is heavily contaminated, it must be freed from water, cleaned the bottom, algae and pitfalls with a hose, and then filled with clean water.

Artificial reservoir style

Conventionally, ponds can be divided into two large main groups, each of which has many varieties:

  • regular pond
  • landscape pond.

A regular pond is created using a pre-made mold. Surely you have thought out a landscape project in advance, so you already have a good idea of ​​how a home reservoir should look like. Based on the wishes for the design of the pond, you can choose a suitable ready-made shape: they are not only correct geometric, but also more complex types: broken, asymmetrical, and so on.

A landscape pond differs from a regular one in that a ready-made form is not used during its construction. Therefore, any configuration can be given to it.

The dimensions and appearance of the reservoir can also be different: you can build a small pond in the Japanese style, the main advantage of which is simplicity, or you can give free rein to your imagination, not being limited to the standard round shape and create a large reservoir filled with various decorations.


Option two - how to make a filter for a decorative pond from a small container

If the reservoir holds up to 5-8 cubic meters of water, you will need a more efficient treatment system.

Such do-it-yourself filter for a summer pond can be made from a small plastic container. There should be a sealed cover on top that is securely fixed to the body.

The installation works elementary: the pump sucks water into the container, which contains the filtering component, and after that the purified liquid returns to the pond.

To make a filter you will need:

  • medium sized plastic container (about 60 * 30 * 30 cm or so)
  • drain siphon
  • submersible pump with a capacity of up to 1000 l / h
  • silicone based sealant
  • foam rubber
  • union with nut
  • clamps
  • hard washcloths
  • hose.

Every summer resident has a lot of this in the household, and everything else can be bought in a hardware store or in the market. The most expensive part of the installation is the water pump.

Suitable as a filtering component:

  • expanded clay, wrapped in agrofibre
  • foam rubber sheets
  • perforated plastic rugs (usually placed near front doors) or plastic / rubber mesh
  • washcloths or sponges, etc.

We make a cleaning device as follows:

  1. On the side, in the lower part of the container, we drill a hole for a siphon through which water will penetrate inside. We use a sealant for the reliability of the connection.
  2. The hose outlet to the pump will be located on the opposite side in
    top of the container. We drill the wall and fasten the fitting hermetically.
  3. We attach a hose to the fitting, and connect the other end to the pump.
  4. Cut out the desired size (to the size of the container) mesh from the selected material. It fits at the very bottom of the container (you can install it on plastic legs) just above the water inlet hole from the siphon.
  5. We fill the container with the selected filter filler; it is better to use the multi-layer option. First, small filtering elements (plastic bio balls) are laid, then we lay the foam rubber in two or three layers. The last layer should not go over the water outlet. Then a rubber mat is laid, corresponding to the size of the container, it will prevent the foam rubber from dislodging under the pressure of the water. Close the lid tightly.
  6. We install the structure in a prepared place so that it
    stood securely and did not move under the influence of vibrations of a running pump.
  7. We connect the pump to the mains and protect the outlet from moisture in order to avoid
    short circuit.
  8. After that, do a test run of the assembled installation and make sure that the water circulates normally through our cleaning container.

Do not forget to clean it periodically, rinsing the filler from the accumulated sludge and dirt.

Option three - a large homemade filter for cleaning a pond with fish from a barrel

For large reservoirs inhabited by fish, the above installations will not work due to insufficient performance, but a more powerful home-made system can be made. Its cost largely depends on the filter material used and the pump power.

Filters for fish ponds differ from systems for conventional ponds in that they must retain the waste products of the inhabitants.

Therefore, the installations must be more powerful.

Structurally filter for a pond with fish from a barrel similar to the previous container system, but with larger dimensions and a powerful pump.

For purification of 50-60 cubic meters, an installation is required, consisting of:

  • 200 liter barrel
  • taps and connecting fittings
  • filter media to retain contamination
  • pumps with a capacity of up to 3500-4000 l / h
  • hose or PVC pipe.

We will use several fillers as filtering components. A plastic barrel with a lid is suitable for the case, but you can use a metal one, it will not expand when the top layer is clogged.

Also, when using a plastic barrel, you will be limited in the maximum pump power, which will affect the efficiency of the system.

To assemble a compact wastewater treatment plant, you need to do the following:

  1. We make two holes in the lower part of the barrel: through one, water will be supplied by a pump, and from the other it will be possible to drain the sediment when washing the filter.
  2. We tightly connect the fittings, to one of which (for the drainage of dirty water) we screw the tap, and leave the other free.
  3. We fall asleep at the bottom of expanded clay or shells for rough cleaning.
  4. Lay a layer of ceramic rings or bioballs on top.
  5. Next, lay out a layer of fine mesh.
  6. On top we lay a layer of synthetic winterizer rings, foam rubber or other
    porous synthetic material.
  7. We press everything with several bricks so that the layers do not under pressure
    shifted.
  8. We drill a wall above the top layer and screw a fitting into it.
  9. We connect a hose to the upper fitting, through which the purified liquid will return to the pond.
  10. We attach a tap and a hose to the lower fitting, which remained free, and connect its other end to the pump.
  11. We connect the pump to the mains, install the structure at the planned location and start it up.

Dirty water from the pond will be supplied to the bottom of the barrel using a pump, after which it will overcome all the cleaning layers and exit through a hose from above and return to the reservoir.

To clean the filler, turn off the tap near the pump and open the drain tap. We supply water under pressure to the hose entering the barrel in the upper part and leave it for 10-15 minutes so that all impurities are washed out through the bottom.
